Playing is a universal phenomenon, an activity of all advanced forms of life, but central to the lives of children. In Dr. Winnicott’s view, play needs to be studied in its own right, as a natural and healthy activity, not only as a means of therapy or for understanding pathology. In this volume, he directs his broad clinical experience to a thorough analysis of the role of what he calls “transitional objects” and “transitional phenomena” (toys, games, etc.) in the development of the individual, showing that they are crucial to the individual’s experience. This is an imaginative, challenging work, in an area which, Dr. Winnicott believes, has been too long neglected by psychoanalysis.
