= A scarce album featuring 24 high-quality photographic plates depicting the palace and botanical gardens of the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies, along with architectural and landscape scenes in and around the city of Buitenzorg, Java (present-day Bogor, Indonesia). The first eleven images focus on the governor’s residence and its gardens, showcasing lakes, pathways, fountains, water lilies, and a wide range of trees. Many of these scenes include local Indonesians in the background, enhancing the ambiance and providing a sense of scale. The remaining thirteen plates present various views of the surrounding area, including buildings (such as the railway station), roads, mountains-one featuring an active volcano-forests, rivers, villages, and agricultural settings. Several images depict local inhabitants engaged in everyday activities. One plate illustrates shops and people in the Chinese district, while another portrays a European figure accompanied by (apparently) local workers. The nicely ornamented title-page, with its decorative border and ornate initial, may have been designed by Lang himself. A printed key to the plates, provided in both Dutch and French, briefly identifies each scene. The German-born Carl Lang (1830-1906) went to Indonesia in the 1860s, where he made his name as photographer and lithographic artist. He obtained government posts as lithographer of the Topographic Bureau in Jakarta and draughtsman of the Botanical Garden in Buitenzorg. He moved to the Netherlands shortly before his death. Fine copy with only slight wear to extremities of portfolio. A rare and fascinating set of photographic Indonesian views.
