Het Kriegsalbum von Gent is een fotografisch album dat in 1916 werd samengesteld door de fotografische afdeling van de Duitse Kommandantur in Gent tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Het werk toont de stad zoals die werd waargenomen en geënsceneerd door de bezetter en presenteert een zorgvuldig geconstrueerd beeld van orde, moderniteit en militaire efficiëntie. De beelden omvatten stadsgezichten, infrastructuur, militaire installaties en momenten uit het dagelijkse leven onder bezetting. Het album diende zowel als souvenir voor Duitse militairen als propagandamiddel voor het thuisfront en vormt vandaag een uitzonderlijke historische bron die inzicht biedt in de visuele strategieën en ideologische representatie van bezet Gent. The work depicts the city as perceived and staged by the occupier and presents a carefully constructed image of order, modernity, and military efficiency. The images include cityscapes, infrastructure, military installations, and moments from daily life under occupation. The album served both as a souvenir for German soldiers and as a propaganda tool for the home front, and today constitutes an exceptional historical source offering insight into the visual strategies and ideological representation of occupied Ghent. The Kriegsalbum von Gent consists of an extensive series of photographic images that systematically document occupied Ghent and its surroundings. The Photographische Abteilung der Kommandantur Gent was a specialized military unit within the German occupation apparatus during the First World War. This department, based in the Hotel Falligan in Ghent, was responsible for the production and control of photographic material in the city and its surroundings. Their activities encompassed both documentation and propaganda, in which images were censored and selected to disseminate a positive and controlled image of the occupation.
