This volume, the third in our exploration of Oluce’s legacy, traces a compelling trajectory from the foundational principles of modernism to the broader conceptual horizons of contemporary design. It opens with Vico Magistretti, the master of Milanese rationalism, whose collaboration with Oluce produced icons of enduring clarity. In works such as the timeless ATOLLO lamp, Magistretti demonstrated that a light source could be distilled into pure geometric form — rigorous, essential, and poetic. As the currents of design evolved, Oluce reaffirmed its vitality by cultivating a new generation of designers while remaining faithful to its formal ethos. The postmodern 1980s and the restrained 1990s marked a period of diversification without fragmentation. Rather than being defined by a single authorial voice, this era unfolded as a dialogue among distinct personalities — including Bruno Gecchelin, Riccardo Dalisi, and Hannes Wettstein — culminating in Marco Romanelli’s appointment as art director following Magistretti’s departure in the mid-1990s. “Oluce Vol. 3” is not conceived as a simple chronological account, but as an exploration of a rare creative alchemy. It examines how a company rooted in craft yet driven by experimentation can serve simultaneously as catalyst and canvas for divergent visions.
