This book is without precedent or parallel. It is largely based on the author's own collection or photographs of Victorian painters, sculptors and engravers, with their wives, models, mistresses, dealers and patrons. The collection, put together over twenty-five years, is the largest in private hands. At least 70 per cent of the 425 illustrations are reproduces here either for the first time or for the first time since they appeared in books of the period. Also included are photographs from private and public collections, such as the Royal Photographic Society, the National Portrait Gallery and The Royal Library, Windsor.
