'This book examines the theories of criticism that have been applied to Joyce's work since the emergence of structuralist theory and considers the ways in which Joyce's writing practice has in turn influenced these theories.
The book is divided into separate chapters on semiotics, structuralism, Marxism, psychoanalytic theory, and
poststructuralism with two chapters devoted to feminist critiques of Joyce's work.
In addition to offering a clear and accessible overview of Joyce and developments in critical theory, the book also looks at how Joyce's writings, particularly "Ulysses" and "Finnegans Wake", have been adopted by the critical community as models for theories about language and writing.
