Nineteenth-century album, oblong folio (315 x 455 mm), original dark blue morocco with gilt title 'JAPON AP 1883' on front board, spine with 5 raised bands, original marbled endpapers; containing 50 albumen print photographs (35 in colour, 15 in b/w), in uniform 215 x 265 mm format, mounted on stiff cardboard leaves, each with letterpress caption; all strong prints with good tonal range, in unusually fine condition. A rare photograph album of topographical views of Yokohama (Grand Hotel, Environs de Yokohama, Homoko); Kanisawa, Hognonanassa, Yenosima, Tokaido, Nikko, Tokyo (Monkogema, Monkodjima, Akango, Uyeno Park (with pink blossom), Gokokou, Kotsungawa, Shiba Park, Oushimagazen, Koudan, Asaska, Kamedo, Oka, Odji, Yesoshima, Oushima, Upanomor, Shipoushti); Osaka, Kobe (Souwayama); Kyoto (Hongandji temple, Kourodami, Nishi Otami, Marou Yama, Kiyo Midzu, Yakaska, Daïbouts, Ouzigawa). Last three pages with photographs of 'Java-Buytenzorg', 'Arabie Aden Citernes' and 'Egypte Alexandrie ruines' (Rue de la Porte Autrichienne) This album probably has been composed by someone travelling in Japan and other parts of the world. This is almost certainly a so-called Yokohama School souvenir album.Many albums are not signed, but were put together in studios in Yokohama. Very fine condition (miner wear to edges binding)
