The astonishingly lifelike wooden statues carved in the Kamakura period (1185-1333) represent a unique flowering of Japanese sculpture. Forty examples, including masterpieces by Unkei, the 'Michelangelo of Japan', and Kaikei, his equally revered colleague, are here shown for the first time.
The Kamakura period is Japanese history saw a renaissance in religion and the arts. In 1185 the Minamoto clan wrested control of Japan from the aristocracy, forming a government Buddhism, which had been introduced to Japan in the sixth century from China and Korea, spread and became accessible to the rural population. Old models for the statues of Buddhist deities were revived as people searced for religious truths in the earliest teachings.
Great temples, like the Kõfukuji and Tõdaiji of Nara that had been burnt to the ground during the wars, were restored, together with their eight-century statuary, by a group of Nara sculptors who developed a style which was a mixture of the eighth-century fashions strongly influenced by the Chinese T'ang dynasty and a new realism in the spirtit of the warrior governors of society. Many fine pieces still survive in the temples and have been specially photographed in Japan for this book.
