I met Freddie West, V.C., C.B.E., M.C., in the middle of the Second World War in Switzerland where, under the British Minister and along with a handful of other Legation Officers, he had been holding the fort for Great Britain since the beginning, against the withering ridicule of German propaganda and against intensive enemy intrigue and espionage. I knew his life had been threatened. Through it all he never failed to see the funny side of things. Admiration and curiosity spurred
me on to find out what it was that went into the making of such a man
It has taken me fifteen years to worm myself sufficiently into his confidence to have him reveal the intimate picture which follows in this story. It is the life story of one who is still very much alive and for that reason the reader will, I am sure, understand a few unavoidable omissions.

Het heeft me vijftien jaar gekost om voldoende vertrouwen in hem te winnen om hem het intieme beeld te laten onthullen dat in dit verhaal volgt. Het is het levensverhaal van iemand die nog springlevend is en daarom zal de lezer, daar ben ik van overtuigd, enkele onvermijdelijke weglatingen begrijpen.
