Voor dit boekje, dat verschijnt ter gelegenheid van de opstelling Chapeau, chapeaux! - hoeden 1650-1960 (3.10.1997-29.3.1998), is een selectie gemaakt uit de ca. 350 hoeden tellende verzameling van het Rijksmuseum. De keuze viel op een 40-tal van de meest interessante, bijzondere, fraaie en unieke hoeden, die in de afgelopen 100 jaar in het museum bijeen zijn gebracht.
De inleidende tekst van dit boekje geeft aan de hand van verschillende aspecten achtergrondinformatie over de gekozen hoeden. Voor het laatste deel van de tekst is dank verschuldigd aan drs. M.G.A. Lemmens, die onderzoek deed naar hoedenmaaksters in Parijs in het tijdvak 1930-1960. Dit in verband met de schenking van circa 50 haute couture hoeden uit die periode, die het Rijksmuseum in 1993 ontving van mevrouw U. Jannink-Veraguth. In dit boekje zijn 10 hoeden uit deze grote schenking, die de directe aanleiding vormde tot het maken van de opstelling Chapeau, chapeaux!, afgebeeld en beschreven.
CHAPEAU, CHAPEAUX!
For this booklet, published in connection with the presentation Chapeau, chapeauxd-hats 1650-1960 (3.10.1997-29.3.1998), a selection has been made from the 350 or so hats in the Rijksmuseum's collection. The choice has fallen on forty of the most interesting, unusual, beautiful or unique hats, which have been collected by the museum over the last hundred years.
The introductory text provides background information on the chosen hats from various angles. For the last part of it thanks are owed to Ms. M.G.A. Lemmens, who undertook further research into the milliners in Paris over the period 1930 to 1960.
This was done in connection with the generous gift of around fifty haute couture hats of that period, which the Rijksmuseum received in 1993 from Mrs U. Jannink-Veraguth.
Ten hats from that gift, which led directly to the making of the Chapeau, chapeauxl presentation, are illustrated and described here.
