With grants to eight major universities Caltech, MIT, NYU, Michigan, Washington, Stanford, Georgia Tech, and Akron--the Guggenheims set the future course of aeronautical education in this country, By mid-century, virtually all of America's senior aerospace engineers were graduates of the Guggenheim-sponsored schools. The author describes the research programs undertaken at each university and such notable achievements as the development of the DC-3.
Here too is the story of the experimental Model Air Line which included the frst scheduled airline service in America and the first organized
weather reporting service for pilots; Timmy Doolittle's pioneering work on blind flying leading to the first successful instrument-only flight in the world; the Guggenheim Inter natonal Safe Aircraft Competition, which stimulated research on short-takeoff-and-landing aircraft; and the revolutionary experiments of rocketeer Robert Goddard. The author also explores the efforts of the Guggenheim fund to foster a positive public image of aviation by promoting air tours, sponsoring a roof-marking campaign, and enlisting the support of prominent public figures such as Charles Lindbergh Orville Wright, and Richard Byrd.
