'INTRODUCTION
Lea Dasberg
Jacob Meijer was born in Winschoten, a small village in one of Holland's northern provinces, Groningen, on the 18th of November 1912 - the 8th of 'Kislev' 5673. He was the son of Samuel Meijer and Martha Krammer.
With his two sisters Mina and Carolina he grew up in very poor circumstances, his father being a small merchant, walking with his dogcart along the Groninger roads to sell textiles from one house to the other.
It was a life of hard labour and at the age of 41, in 1923, the man was worn out and died.
His son was 10 years of age by then. (...).
In the autumn of 1925 Jaap Meijer, 13 years of age, entered the Rabbinical Seminary in Amsterdam:
a transplant from a provincial Jewish climate to the Jerusalem of the West.
