These are the questions addressed by the ciontributors to this volume. Adopting a wide variety of critical approaches, the essays range from detailed analyses of religious discourse to theoretical inquiries into the forces that shapes ideas of sanctity. They offer an equally wide range of conclusions, in particular with res-
pect to the complex and multiple functions of sainthood in medieval culture. Taken together, they point to new ways of imagining ansd "imaging" the medieval saint.
The book had its origins innthe Barnard Medieval and Renaissance Conference in 1987.
