Shooting Suns and Things tells the story of the fliers who came to Portmarnock Beach, Ireland, in the period 1930 to 1933. A natural runway on the western edge of Europe it was used as a take-off point for transatlantic flights against the prevailing wind.
The main participants in the story are Charles Kingsford-Smith (Smithy), Jim Mollison and Charles Ulm – three heroes of those pioneering times. Amy Johnson is also involved. She was newly-wed when she came to Ireland to be with her husband, Mollison, during preparations for his take-off.
Shooting Suns and Things tells of aviators who pioneered the way for the air routes of today - aviators whose lives were strangely interlinked in the fashion of a plot to a novel.
