WHAT I have written here does not purport to be a life story of the late Sir Charles Kingsford Smith. Nothing so ambitious has been attempted. What I have done is briefly to sketch the flying career of a man who in his day was universally acclaimed “The Daddy of them All”
Smithy's was a life of such epic sweep and compass as to intimidate all but the boldest of biographers. I have sought only to provide a glimpse of the courage, the character and determined purpose of a man whose personality illumined the years in which he lived. My story should be of interest particularly to a generation which can know him only through the spoken word and printed page.
Here at least is an authentic, if not exhaustive, picture of Charles Edward Kingsford Smith, trail-blazer of the air.
I take this opportunity to acknowledge my debt to Mr. Allan G. Sleeman for the patience and enthusiasm he brought to the task of reviewing my manuscript.
