Plus d'informations
Australia has few legends, fewer legendary personalities. But if anybody can be put in the national gallery of heroes, Smithy--Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith—is one.
Ward McNally's new account of Smithy's life and times contains a substantial amount of unpublished material. He has been helped by Mrs Mary Tully (formerly Lady Kingsford-Smith) and others to fill in some of the gaps in the story.
The pioneer of world aviation started life quite humbly, but World War I gave him the opportunity to get into the excitement and development of flying. In the 1920s he was one of a band of young war veterans who worked their way from stunts and joyriding to epic, pathfinding flights, establishing the shape of future world air travel.
Mr McNally deals with various aspects of Kingsford-Smith's later career: his attempts to launch a domestic airline, which ended with the Southern Cloud disaster, the personal and political complexities which surrounded his endeavour to win the backing of governments for airmail services to England and New Zealand, and his need to turn again to record-breaking and barnstorming to keep going through the difficult Depression years.
Some of Kingsford-Smith's exploits remain as controversial today as they were when he was alive. But Ward McNally's book comes close to revealing all the glory and sadness and drama that crammed the life of this small, lean, smiling man.
Thirty-four photographs, including some of unique interest, add their effectiveness to the text.
