Commentary: Early Characters Dominate the Embossed Cover
Aside from gilt title David Copperfield this 1872 cover resembles all of the others in the Chapman & Hall/Harper & Bros. collaborative edition: Mr. Pickwick points left, and below him Seth Pecksniff's hair stands on end. To Pecksniff's left, the Yorkshire schoolmaster from Nicholas Nickleby, Wackford Squeers, seems to be checking a list; and opposite him, to the right edge of the cover, is Captain Cuttle (readily identifiable by his hook) from Dombey and Son, pointing towards the left. Needless to say, no character from David Copperfield, not even the writer's most brilliant comic creation, Wilkins Micawber, appears on the gilt-green embossed book cover.
