Met de opkomst van de neogotische bouwkunst kwam halverwege de negentiende eeuw een herwaardering op gang van de beeldhouwkunst ingepast in de architectuur. Geïnspireerd door de architect P.J.H. Cuypers ontstond een hausse aan sculptuurtoepassingen voor architecten van verschillende richtingen. Het was nagenoeg ondenkbaar dat een belangrijk gebouw werd opgetrokken zonder een rijke sculpturale detaillering.
Beeldhouwers als Mendes da Costa en Zijl werden omstreeks de eeuwwisseling ingeschakeld door de architect Berlage. Hun samenwerking wordt vaak gezien als het eerste signaal van een moderne Nederlandse beeldhouwkunst.
Haar grootste bloei kende de bouwbeeldhouwkunst in de periode tussen de wereldoorlogen. De architectuur van de Amsterdamse School gaf bijvoorbeeld volop werk aan beeldhouwers als Hildo Krop.
Muurvast gebeiteld is vooral een platenboek. Korte teksten schetsen de ontwikkeling; de vele illustraties geven een zeer compleet beeld van een eeuw 'bouwbeeldhouwkunst'. With the rise of Gothic revival architecture halfway through the nineteenth century, a reevaluation of architectural applications of sculpture got underway. Inspired by the architect P.J.H. Cuypers, there was a boom in the use of sculpture by architects of various schools. It was almost unimaginable for an important building to be built without rich sculptural detail.
Sculptors like Mendes de Costa and Zijl were brought in around the turn of the century by the architect Berlage. Their collaboration is often seen as the first manifestation of modern Dutch sculpture.
Architectural sculpture flourished most in the period between the wars. The architecture of the Amsterdam School for example, provided ample work for sculptors such as Hildo Krop.
