Jeugdverhaal over Duitse en Engelse oorlogsvliegers in 1944.
The Royal Air Force has left its mark on numerous places in the world. Memorials to commemorate #RAF actions and personnel can be found around the world, from Dartmoor to Myanmar and from South Africa to Georgia in the #US.
A rather modern approach was used in Sint-Truiden, a small town in #Belgium, known there for its delicious fruit. In the centre of the city, an unused wall was used by graffiti artists to depict the story of the ‘ghost flyer’.
During the #SecondWorldWar, a story was told by locals about a mysterious ghost 'pilot, who, night after night, would attack the #Nazi German airfield nearby. Although a myth, the ghost pilot later became identified as George de Menten de Horne.
He was born in Sint-Truiden, but joined the RAF to become a navigator on Lancaster bombers. On 2 January 1944, returning from his twenty-seventh sortie over #Germany, his #Lancaster crashed near Spalding, Lincolnshire with the loss of the entire crew.
Both his brother and sister were in the Resistance. His brother aided the escape of around 40 shot down airmen until he was arrested by the German occupiers and shot.
