This catalogue documents a solo exhibition of the Dutch painter and sculptor Karel Appel at Gallery Guy Pieters in Knokke-Zoute, Belgium, held from 5 June to 5 July 1988. The book presents approximately 140 pages of reproductions, mostly colour plates of paintings, sculptures and works on paper by Appel, alongside an introductory essay by the art historian Alan Bowness. The visual material emphasises Appel?s bold use of color and gesture, his painterly experiments and sculptural constructions. The text situates his work in the context of the post-war European movement CoBrA and his continuing relevance into the late 1980s. The catalogue also contains the exhibition checklist with provenance details and perhaps selected documentation of the gallery installation. Karel Appel (1921?2006) was a Dutch painter, sculptor and poet, co-founder of the avant-garde movement CoBrA in 1948. He studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam and went on to develop a highly expressive and colorful style, working across painting, sculpture and installations. Appel?s restless experimentation, material sensibility and gestural immediacy made him one of the most significant European artists of the second half of the 20th century.
