The book explores fundamental questions around language evolution: what was language's original purpose? How did it develop? Why is language so different from other forms of animal communication?
Aitchison pieces together evidence from several areas to discuss possible paths of language evolution: animal communication; child language acquisition; creole and pidgins; findings from archaeology and evolutionary studies.
This is an excellent, accessible study of language development that serves as solid scaffolding for further academic research.
