It begins with an overview of the origins of Buddhism in India and its historical spread to other Asian regions, including Southeast Asia, Central Asia, and East Asia and details the main figures of worship in the Buddhist tradition: the historical Buddha; Bodhisattvas; and many other historical figures such as Bodhidharma and Padmasambhava.
A central part of the book is its detailed explanation of the major signs, symbols, and ritual objects found in Buddhist art. This includes the meaning behind mudras, the 32 distinctive marks of Buddha, and the many ritual objects used in ceremonies and worship.
While not a strict chronological or geographical study, the book covers the breadth of the Buddhist world, illustrating how imagery adapted to different cultural contexts. There is a visitors' guide that includes an overview of major Buddhist sites worldwide for those with a deeper interest.
To further aid the reader, the book provides subject names in relevant languages (Sanskrit, Tibetan, Thai, etc.), a comprehensive glossary of key Buddhist terms, and a bibliography for further research.
