Central Park, an American Masterpiece" refers to the title of a book by photographer and historian Sara Cedar Miller that explores Central Park's history, but also the designation of the park itself as a masterpiece of landscape architecture. Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux and built from 1857 to 1873, Central Park is recognized as a National Historic Landmark and a National Scenic Landmark for its groundbreaking design, its influence on urban parks nationwide, and its creation as a "public place" for all New Yorkers.
