= First edition of a landmark of Victorian book design. Ruari McLean, Victorian Book Design & Colour Printing (1963), p. 72 and 151: "One of the "supreme examples of Victorian Gothic" in which Humphreys shows a beautiful fusion of his papier-mache binding and the masterly design of his suite of chromolithographs illustrating the miracles. These bindings resemble ebony carved panels - this particular example being inspired by a 12th century psalter in possession of the British Museum - but were in fact cast in plaster over a papier mache mould. The chromolithographs are clearly inspired by medieval illuminated manuscripts. "The result was splendidly gothic and impressive", and they represent "perhaps the biggest triumph among all the ingenuities of Victorian commercial book-binding". Morris/ Levin, The Art of Publishers' Bookbindings, p.160ff. Text leaves include "Remarks of the Illuminator" and "Descriptive Index of the Miracles". Relievo panels remarkably well preserved with only minimal superficial cracks; the leather spine worn with a larger piece lacking in the middle (ca.5 cm.). First leaf "Remarks of the Illuminator" loose. Near-fine copy.
