From the cover: “In May 1992 Miles Clark skippered the 35 ft. fifty year old family yacht Wild Goose from Ireland to the White Sea, to arrive as the ice was melting. With grudging KGB permission and National Geographic sponsorship he sailed Wild Goose south for 2,000 miles first along Stalin’s Canal to Lake Onega then down the mighty hut polluted Volga. Rushing against time as she crossed by canal to the River Don, Wild Goose then sailed out into the Black Sea to reach Istanbul just ahead of the lethal gales of September.

When Wild Goose returned to Ireland she became undoubtedly the first non-Russian boat to circumnavigate both Russia and the Continent of Europe. She had called at isolated settlements, remote villages and cities never before visited by a foreign boat. Sadly she was without her skipper as he died before the return voyage could be completed.

Miles Clark packed experiences and achievements into a short cheerful life. He sailed in square rig in the Caribbean on Operation Drake, rowed in the Boat Race and led a Cambridge expedition to the Aleutians. Commissioned in the Royal Greenjackets, he took time off to join Tim Severin’s Voyage of the Heroes repeating the search for the Golden Fleece.

Then as a self taught writer and photographer he joined Yachting Monthly, leaving after two years to become freelance. With his father he organised the successful Lord of the Isles voyage in a sixteenth-century galley. Miles also married and became a proud father.

His first book on Sky Diving was followed by High Endeavours, an ambitious biography of his godfather, the famous and laid-back soldier and navigator Miles Smeeton.

His third book would have been his own account of his voyage to and across Russia.

The present writer Wallace Clark helped to plan his son’s voyage and sailed on the first and last legs of the epic. He has compiled this book from Miles’ logs and the accounts of the two armed Russians who under KGB diktat joined Wild Goose at Archangel.

Wallace Clark’s classic yachting book Sailing Round Ireland has remained in print fort the last twenty years.”
