Böckelmann (Steinfurt Germany, 1632) was professor of Law at the universities of Heidelberg and Leiden and one of the first to teach the Institutes and the Digest not from the text but from self compiled manuals based on these sources. As with most Leiden law professors his works are important for legal teaching and pratice than for legal science. The Digest commentary offered here remained unfinished during the author's lifetime (d. 1681) and the first edition (1687) contained the commentary on the first 19 books only. Our second edition includes also the unedited notes to books 20-27. The second work is in the last revised edition (first edition also posthumous 1687); Ahsmann & Feenstra : Bibliografie van Hoogleraren in de rechten aan de Leidse Universiteit tot 1811, nr. 31 and 48; Cf.
