Denis Johnson schreef novelles, romans, poëzie en non-fictie. Hij won de Whiting Writers’ Award. Een zuil van rook (2008), zijn eerste roman sinds bijna tien jaar, blies iedereen internationaal omver en is bekroond met de National Book Award 2007. Sta stil verscheen in de zomer van 2008 als feuilleton in de Amerikaanse Playboy en Treindromen verscheen in Paris Review. Het werd bekroond met de Aga Khan Prize For Fiction en was genomineerd voor de Pulitzerprijs 2012. Het verschijnt nu voor het eerst in een zelfstandige uitgave.
