The myth of Adam and Eve (…) forged the association for the Christian West of female nakedness with sin, sex, and danger (…). Miles gloomily concedes ‘ there is no iconographical tradition in the Christian West that identifies spiritual struggle or the cultivation of a centred religious self with the female body’ (p.144). Yet she holds out the hope that women artists whose work is both public and collective may create an adequate artistic practice for the representation of female subjectivity. Miles (…) adopts a modified Foucauldian approach, claiming that the ‘productive’ (not just ‘reflective’) nature of such representations of women encourages both sexes to conform willingly to societal regulation - yet faults Foucault (and others) who do not adequately attend to the real-life oppression of women. Her argument throughout is solidly and refreshingly feminist.
