Temkin investigates the changing relationships between secular, Jewish and Christian approaches to healing, in order to discover how a medical system originating in a pagan social context not only survived, but flourished, in a Christian world. In the first section (...), T. looks at the use of the corpus itself in the creation of the legend of Hippocrates in the first and second centuries A.D. (...). T. then looks at the relationship between Christian and Hippocratic views of healing. (...) Christian theology began to make use of Hippocratic theories and ideals. The ideal doctor became the model for the ideal pastor, Jesus being the supreme physician of the soul. (...) Christianity gave its approval to Hippocratic standards of the 'best' doctor: outstanding not only in his success rate but also in his character, being unselfish, exhibiting self-control and exercising a humane approach when it came to deciding the fee to charge. As one would expect from T., this is a highly learned piece of work (...). It is also very readable, helped by the decision to let the sources speak for themselves (...).'
