8vo (22x14 cm); xviv + 414 + 32 pages publishers advertisements. illustrated with 2 steel portraits, 2 coloured maps and 186 woodcut illustrations. Original decorated green cloth, gilt titling to spine.
Condition very good: Bright and clean. Spine ends bumped, light offsetting of plates and age related yellowing.
The voyage, which lasted from 1878 to 1880, was undertaken to prove the navigability by steamship of the North-East Passage. Nordenskiöld's mission was to establish a trade route along the coast of Northern Siberia. He sailed from Scandinavia, along the northern border of Russia through the arctic sea, and ended up in Alaska and then Japan. He and his crew sailed home via the southern route. Nordenskiöld was praised and hailed for the results of his expedition, and captured the attention of newspapers when at one point he and his crew were stranded by the ice. A fascinating arctic travelogue.
