Next, Hornblower has produced a short history, which he calls 'story', of Greek historiography in order to fill the gaps among the following chapters as well as to interrelate them. H. offers interesting reflections on the division in books of the historians (16-17). Very rightly he has introduced the figure of the 'historiographer' as different from the 'historian' (12,24), and he cleverly distinguishes 'History' 'as a way of looking at the past' from 'Historiography', 'which is the work of fallible human beings with often strong political and other beliefs, cannot help manipulate the past' (38). (...) This book is tremendously stimulating (...). The work ends by a well chosen bibliography (249-69) and a useful index (271-86). (...) Several chapters of the book show what could be profitably undertaken in the relation of historiography to other subjects: religion, natural sciences, epigraphy. (...) Moreover, the outlook of ancient historians in their social and political contexts could form the basis of a systematic study of Greek and Roman historiography.’ (J.M.
