Man had only been flying for a few years when the war of 1914-1918 began, so the use of aircraft in war was a new phenomenon. Each combatant nation that had the capability was quick to employ the new technology to secure battlefield intelligence and gain superiority over the enemy, with the result that the early military pilots learned as they flew, developing tactics and strategies as they went, and becoming national heroes overnight if they brought success to the campaign.
This book deals with those who survived the rigours of early air combat to reach the status of an `ace' by virtue of receiving their nation's premier award for such deeds. Here, the author provides biographies of the principal flyers along with photographs of many; additionally there are lists of others who achieved lower quantities of airborne successes.
