Handwritten account. 20 x 16 cm. Lined school notebook paper. 20 p., last 2 p. blank. Very readable handwriting in brown ink. Worn and stained, spine repaired. With a postcard of the Steamship Dominion. Detailed account of the crossing of the Atlantic Ocean by Mr. Arthur Henry Owston (1879-1958) on the S.S. Dominion, a line that connected Britain with Canada via Ireland and Nova Scotia over Portland to Quebec. Owston, a young American (from California?), had been visiting Britain. He stayed in a first or second class cabin together with someone called Jack and described the third class passengers on two occasions, mentioning a contingent of children in a sort of uniform, as belonging to an institution. These must have been 'British Home Children', sent by Barnardo's or Dr. Stephenson's orphanages. Owston describes the alternating between calm and stormy weather on board of the large steamship, where he entertains the people with playing the piano, and walks on the deck and plays football with an improvised ball.
