= Rare first German translation of The anatomy and surgical treatment of inguinal and congenital hernia (London, 1804); a second German edition was published under the slightly different title Anatomische Beschreibung und chirurgische Behandlung der Unterleibsbru¨che. Important scientific atlas with exceptionally detailed and large-sized plates with explanations in print. We were unable to locate any 19th cent. copies of this atlas in the trade either in English or German editions. Lacking plates 1-3; plates with marginal waterstains (except for plate 11 penetrating inside the platemark); some marginal tears. Not in Bibliotheca Osleriana or Garriison/ Morton. "Cooper, th emost popular surgeon in London during the early part of the 19th century, was connected with both Guy's and St. Thomas' Hospital" (Garrison/ Morton). He was an outstandingly successful surgeon. With his accomplishments in surgery and experiments in dissection he soon became a prominent figure and received recognition worldwide. With his passion for anatomy, his love for surgery and his expanding knowledge he became Surgeon to Guy’s Hospital in 1800 and in the same year was elected a Fellow to the Royal Society. His attainments led him to become surgeon to three successive British monarchs as well as receiving a bestowal of Baronetcy. Through his edifying lectures, fastidious experiments and publications on anatomy and pathology he has inspired and enlightened many budding anatomists and surgeons and the principles of his teachings still prevail in practice today.
