Preface by K. Abé:
It has been more than forty years since my first encounter with jazz. During all this time it has continued to be a great source of inspiration and pleasure.
Photography has enchanced my feelings for the music.
I was excited early on by the photographs of musicians thatt appeared in such magazines as Metronome and Down Boat.
These pictures, which captured the people, places, instruments, and atmosphere of jazz, often affected me as much as the music itself. with my own camera work, i found a new way to explore and connect with this music.
jazz has continued to evolve, with its younger players embracing styles and blends that the original masters could never have imagined.
While immersing myself in these modern sounds, I glance through the old photographs and reminded of the individuality and the spirit of adventure that have always been present in jazz, whatever its form of the moment.
I have compiled the photographs in this book because of my desire to share them-- and the feelings they evoke-- with everyone who loves jazz and the great musicians who have been part of this history.
