Clara Barton began her career teaching in a one-room schoolhouse and wound up in charge of nursing operations on Civil War battlefields. As an army nurse, she convinced stubborn surgeons of the need for clean, orderly field hospitals. After the war, Barton founded the American Red Cross and led this emergency assistance organization to disaster areas both abroad and at home. Barton also led in the fight for women's suffrage, part of her lifelong battle against ignorance and prejudice.
