The development of Application Services Library ASL® and Business Information Services Library BiSL® started in the Netherlands in the early years of this century. These libraries describe the work of applications
administrators (ASL) and business information administrators and information managers (BiSL) by means of a process model and numerous practical experiences in the form of ‘best practices’.
In recent years, these ideas have inspired many large and small organizations to
raise their information provisioning to a higher level. Meanwhile, ASL and BiSL
have begun to make inroads outside of the Netherlands. The libraries are
available in English and some parts are also available in languages such as Polish,
Russian, Japanese and Chinese. Furthermore, in 2015 an ISO standard (ISO/IEC 16350) for application management based on ASL is published.
Right from the start the ideas have been managed by a foundation, the ASL BiSL
Foundation. This foundation wanted to reward organizations for their
application of ASL en BiSL. This gave rise to the annual competition for the ASL
BiSL Trophy, which was later preceded by an award election, where bronze, silver
and gold awards were handed out.
In order to learn from these experiences, we visited ten of the ASL BiSL Trophy
and Awards winners and asked them to share their story about the competition.
Why did they submit their case? What did the application of ASL or BiSL yield
their organization, what was it like to win a prize and what happened to them
afterwards? Their experiences are recorded in this compilation.
