This book describes and illustrates 145 rail species, comprising all living species - including two that have only recently been described - as well as ten species that have recently become extinct, plus all recently extinct races of surviving species. Based on up-to-date references and on new observations, it is the first book that gives comprehensive information on field identification (including voice), covering all species and races for which details are known, and the first to provide descriptions of the immature and juvenile plumages of many species. A detailed summary of current knowledge of all aspects of rail biology and their often complex behaviour, social structure, and family life is provided. Rail habitats are fast disappearing, say the authors, and many rails become endangered before enough is known about them to plan effective conservation measures. The book provides information on distribution, status, habitat requirements, and current threats, and it gives conservation priorities for threatened species. Complemented by 43 superb colour plates and numerous line drawings.

The Horn Collection bestaat uit 200 gespecialiseerde vogel- en natuurboeken die deel uitmaakten van de privécollectie van de internationaal geprezen (wijlen) Nederlandse vogelpreparateur Ewold Horn. * Ewold signeerde zelf bijna al zijn boeken, en dit feit wordt als zodanig dan ook niet nog extra vermeld in de beschrijving.
