'We live in an age of criticism, and we all highly appreciate its labours in many departments of literature; but no one can read the utterances of certain Old Testament critics of our day without deep concern.
Judging from some popular books, magazine articles, and sermons, the Old Testament can no longer be taken in the simply way in which our ancestors used to read it. We are told that the Law was written after the Prophets; the Deuteronomy is not a faithful record of the last speeches of Moses; that David did not write the 110th Psalm, though our Lord said he did; that the Book of Jonah is a legend; that the Book of Daniel is much later than the supposed age of Daniel; and, speaking generally that the testimony of the Books to supernatural appearances, words, and actions, is not to be regarded as "historical", in the strict sense of the word.
No wonder that many young men who had hoped to become. teachers and preachers, and to follow the lines laid down in the Old and New Testaments, shrink from the ordeal of saying that they unfeignedly believe the Scriptures. (...)'.
