From the beginning, the Winnipeg Art Gallery recognized the artist's talent. While a student at the University of Manitoba in 1956, Eyre was the recipient of the Winnipeg Art Gallery Scholarship. In 1957 he was awarded the Winnipeg Show Purchase Prize; the painting that earned him that early distinction is one of fifty-seven Ivan Eyre works that have entered the Winnipeg Art Gallery's permanent collection" - from the preface.
