- Expertly restored. Formerly framed in the original Rotterdam Lloyd company frame, which curiously enough was made too small in height. These posters used to be folded in the top and bottom margin to fit the frames - these folds have been flattened again; restorations in places. = Very rare and iconic poster. A true landmark of Dutch and international poster art. Johann von Stein is most remembered for his design of this poster, which he made for the Rotterdamsche Lloyd [Rotterdam Lloyd Company], which sailed primarily from Northwestern Europe through the Suez-Canal to the Dutch East Indies. The unparalleled representation of the Baloeran ocean-liner on a smooth sea is considered one of the most beautiful ship poster designs ever made. Von Stein here parallels the famous designs of A.M. Cassandre, such as the Paquebot 'Atlantique and the Normandie. Thanks to the graphic styling and in particular of the palms and the foreground, a unique image is created. The palmtrees in the front offer a see-through as if they are curtains, which is an unusual compositional find, used here to enforce the whole scene. The design appears to be even more composed of verticals, intersected by two horizontals -the ship and the shore - whose common vanishing point lies outside the image.
