"When a sighted person meets a blind person he will feel beset by several questions. Questions which differ in importance but which all lead to the central problem: 'Is a blind man fundamentally different from a sighted man?' or more plainly: 'What sort of a man is the blind man?' This wording of the question may give rise to a number of misunderstandings. In speaking about 'the blind man' we are inclined to generalize our experience. Or, what may be even more dangerous, we conceive of a non-existent ideal blind man, whom we take as our model and on whom we build our theories. We will try, however, to reserve our judgement until the ground of our explorations has been cleared of all the pseudo-problems that interfere with a real understanding of the blind man..."
