The Condor, Germany's giant long-range four-engine bomber, described by Winston Churchill as the"Scourge of the Atlantic" was highly successful, in conjunction with U-boat wolf packs, in bringing Britain to near defeat in the Battle of the Atlantic. Here, Kenneth Poolman recounts, with graphic detail, a grim battle of attrition in which the Allies fought to counter the Condor with brilliant improvisation and fortitude.
At the beginning of the campaign, the Condor, attacking at masthead height, sank 85 ships in six months. With no aircraft cariers to spare to provide fighter protection, the Admiralty fitted scarce anti-aircraft guns to merchant ships supplemented with ingenious new weapons like parachute and cable, grenade and crude rocket launchers. Catapults were then fitted to merchantmen, each with a Humicane fighter. The pilot, after fighting a heavily armed Condor, had to parachute into the sea as his fuel ran out. Later, the Condors were used with great effect to shadow Allied convoys and home-in U-boats by radio. It was only with the arrival of mini-carriers equipped with fighter aircraft that the campaign entered its final stages and the Condor was mastered.
