"The sketches in this volume have appeared from time to time in 'The Freemason', and it is owing to the repeated suggestions of Brethren whose good opinion of them is highly valued that they are now published in book form, for which purpose the matter has recently been revised and brought up to date. The work in the first instance was prompted by the thought that something should be done in this way to mark the time and activities of these notable Brehtren who have done, and are still doeing, such excellent service for East Lancashire Freemasonry; and whilst being fully conscious of the fact that much more might, with advantage, have been said concerning them, and of the many defects of style and literary flavour which characterise this effort, it is my hope that to some extent it may serve the intended purpose.
It is a matter for congratulation that there are a large number of Masonic Worthies in the Province in addition to those mentioned herein, but it is obviously impossible for one to write of them all from personal knowledge; therefore it must not be inferred, from the fact that only a few are included in this record (it is left to others to supplement the list), that any invidious distinctions are made. All profits derived from the sale of the book will be devoted to the East Lancashire Masonic Benevolent Institution." - William A. Bacon. January 1st, 1913.
