"The history of organised Freemasonry is shown to have commenced with the inauguration of the premier Grand Lodge in London on the Festival of St. John the Baptist in 1717. But what preceded that event and what happened afterwards? The author has applied his considerable masonic scholarship to these questions and has produced a very readable book which supplies the background for both periods. Throughout he has provided ample references for masonic students who may wish to pursue in detail facets in which they have special interest. The conflict that arose between Premier Grand Lodge, known as the 'Moderns', and the one formed in 1751 to preserve ancient forms and therefore known as the 'Antients', laid down an official barrier which lasted until they joined together on the Festival of St. John the Evangelist in 1813. So came into existence The United Grand Lodge of England, which, together with its sister Grand Lodges of Ireland and Schotland, has set the standard for regular Freemasonry throughout the world."
