"I accepted the invitation to write a book on deafness for this series on special education becahse I wanted to treat the topic in a different way from the usual educational presentation. In fact, other books frequently start where this one leaves off. This book attempts to provide a solid theoretical foundation from which a more technical treatment of education can follow. Not all statements in the book are scientific in a narrow sense. The first five chapters are designed to introduce the reader to the life and world of deafness in the United States. These chapters were written from a personal perspective based on observations of and reasearch about deaf people for the past fifteen years. To require scientific validity in this introduction would turn it into an unwieldly mass of statistical details, which in themselves are meaningless and, as everybody knows, are open to diverse interpretations..."
