Cinema Olanda, the Dutch entry to the 57th Venice Biennale 2017, manifests artist Wendelien van Oldenborgh's and curator Lucy Cotter's shared interest in the dynamic relationship between aesthetic and social imaginaries.
Taking Gerrit Rietveld's iconic Dutch Pavilion as its conceptual departure point, the exhibition operates in the cracks between the projected image of the Netherlands as a transparent avant-garde country and its reality today as a rapidly transforming social, cultural, and political space.
The project extends its questions in an extensive parallel program in the Netherlands.
This publication documents Van Oldenborgh's architectonic installation and her new filmic works that it houses and resonates with. Commissioned essays by writers from several fields address and extend Cinema Olanda's engagement with art, film, architecture, and the conditions for agency and transformation at this present moment.
