Hardcover, stofwikkel, kleine in-8, 126 pp. Uit het Italiaans (?) vertaald door J.F. Kliphuis; daarover bestaat twijfel en Kliphuis zou de Engelse vertaling als basis kunnen hebben genomen.
Speelt zich af tijdens WO2 in Joegoslavië/Slovenië, rond Ljubljana. De partizanen straffen 5 vrouwen die met een Italiaanse sergeant sliepen. De verhaallijn verloopt verder onconventioneel en dat is een pluspunt.
Werd in 1960 knap verfilmd door Martin Ritt (1914-1990) met Silvia Mangano, Jeanne Moreau, Vera Miles, Barbara Bel Geddes en Carla Gravina in de hoofdrollen. Opmerkelijk is dat in de film de Italiaanse sergeant werd vervangen door een Duitse sergeant (Keller).
Ugo Pirro (April 20, 1920 – January 18, 2008) was an Italian screenwriter and novelist.
Born Ugo Mattone in Battipaglia, near Salerno, he debuted as screenwriter for director Carlo Lizzani (Achtung! Banditi!, 1951, and Il gobbo, 1960).
His screenplays of the 1970s include films Indagine su un cittadino al di sopra di ogni sospetto and Il giardino dei Finzi-Contini, which both won Academy Awards as Best Foreign Film.
Pirro was also a literature author, his most notable works being Le soldatesse (1956), set in the Italian occupation of Greece during World War II, and Celluloide, adapted for cinema by Lizzani in 1996.
