Full title: RAMBLES IN SEARCH OF WILD FLOWERS, And how to distinguish them. Second Edition.
The introduction assembles a small cast of characters, Fanny, Esther and Edward who in subsequent pages of text are able to go on plant collecting rambles in their holidays, Esther in Scotland, Fanny in Wilts, Devon and Cornwall and Edward in Kent and Shropshire. It is largely a systematic descriptive account of wild plant species. Margaret Plues (1828-1901) was a clergyman's daughter from Ripon who wrote several popular books on plant life, including further rambles in search of mosses and flowerless plants and books on ferns, fungi and grasses.
In 1861 the author was living with relatives near Hawkhurst and hence there are numerous Kent references in the text. Wild Flowers was first published in 1863, this second in 1864, and third and fourth editions appeared in 1879 and 1892.
