In 1807, a writer named John Lambert had this to say about New York City: "All was life, bustle and activity. The people were scampering to trade with each other. Every thought, word, look and action of the multitudes seemed to be absorbed in commerce".
One need not go as far as Byron Rufus Newton and say: "New York, thy name is delirium". But apparently people tend to share O. Henry's assessment of the city: "New York City! Baghdad on the subway!"
Modern New York is essentially a product of the nineteeth century. Its prominence stems from the fact that it is the world's greatest natural harbor. Although composed of five seperate towns called boroughs - Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island and The Bronx - its heart, soul and government reside in the towering skyscrapers and canyon streets of Manhattan.
Immigrants from all parts of the world have given it the name of "melting pot" of nations. This phenomenon of peaceful cohabitation of so many different races and cultures is absolutely unique in the world. The colorful life it engenders is described in this book.
